Glorious Goodwood Free Bet on Canford Cliffs?
There are one or two reasons to doubt the claims of Canford Cliffs in this afternoon's Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, but they're not overwhelming reasons. One is that he's up against last year's winner, Rip Van Winkle. Now four years old, he hasn't quite recaptured last year's form yet, weakening in his only return, but coming back to Goodwood where he outclassed his rivals last year could be the perfect tonic.
Canford Cliffs is not entirely invincible, either - his defeats showed a one-pace finish, so odds of 4/6 are purely based on the last two races in which admittedly, he was impressive, despite not facing opposition as good as Rip Van Winkle at his very best.
The undulating racecourse may cause a problem - Ascot is a carpet in comparison, and Newmarket a bowling green. So claims that he is at the top of his game have to be absolutely rock solid to warrant those odds of 8/11.
But warranted they may be. There's little so far to suggest that Rip Van Winkle is back to his best, and Richard Hannon, who rides Canford Cliffs, is bang in form himself. So - for the clever gambler, perhaps one to miss, but definitely one to watch.
Later in the day, look out for 20/1 shot Grey Bunting in the 4:00 - he looks like he can handle the distance and in a quite open race, he's definitely worth an each-way punt.
