It’s still Sea the Stars, even at 4/6 in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
Rarely have we seen a horse as good as Sea the Stars - in fact, so good that if he wins the Prix de l'Arc on Sunday, which everyone expects him to, then he could become the greatest racehorse of all time, according to the Timeform statistics.
And that would make John Oxx a very, very rich man when Sea the Stars inevitably goes to stud next year. In fact, John Oxx is going to be a very rich man whatever happens at Longchamp on Sunday.
The rest of the field is, well - not quite as good. It would take a real off-day from Sea The Stars, of which we have seen none, for the likes of Fame and Glory and Conduit to really put up a fight. In fact, I'm looking further down the field to Cavalryman, as long as 10/1 with some bookies, as the horse that will chase home Sea the Stars, and Beheshtam, who is no slacker - to get a valiant each-way.
The French horses usually love this one - and English horses, primarily those who run early season in the Derby and fade as the winter coat grows, do not. In fact, as I always tell you at this time of year, the Arc is almost always won by a 3-year-old French-trained horse, probably Andre Fabre's, and one that won the Prix Niel. Cavalryman fits the bill, but he's no Hurricane Run, and he's certainly no Peintre Celebre.
Elsewhere, it will be the last race for legendary Yeats in the Prix du Cadran on Sunday, so at 9/4 he may not be the best price in the world, but it would be worth sticking around after the Prix de l'Arc just to see him one last time.
