Keane out… but Allardyce in? Odds from Paddy Power on the next Sunderland manager
Bookie Paddy Power (get more information on the paddy power free bet offer) has slashed the odds on Sunderland’s relegation following the news of Roy Keane’s departure. With six league defeats in a row Sunderland’s odds for relegation has already plummeted to 12/5. However Keane’s exit looks to be another damaging blow and Paddy Power has further cut the odds on the Black Cats going down to 2/1.
Former Sunderland player Sam Allardyce is the early favourite at 4/1 to take over from Keano whilst Gordon Strachan, who started in the betting at 14/1 was almost immediately cut to 5/1 second favourite amidst rumours that Keane could be heading to Celtic
Strachan is followed by Alan Curbishley at 6/1 with Keane’s fellow Irishman David O’Leary at 18/1 to be the next manager and the Sunderland chairman himself Niall Quinn at 100/1.
Where Will Keano Go?
Meanwhile Paddy Power isn’t sure Keane will be out of the spotlight for too long making Celtic the most likely destination for his next managerial role at 5/2 followed by Nottingham Forest at 5/1. They are followed by the Irish national job at 6/1 with Manchester United 9/1 and Cobh Ramblers among the outsiders at 66/1.
Paddy Power said: “Just as managerial betting markets were getting a bit quiet you can rely on Roy Keane to shake things up! His next job and likely destination should prove very popular markets such is the interest that always follows Roy Keane.
“Sam Allardyce seems to be an unpopular name amongst any clubs’ fans when he is linked to their management post but as a former Sunderland player he is the early favourite for Black Cat fans to consider.”
Now, forgive me for being a bit out of synch with the general populace here, but isn't Sam Allardyce the man who took Bolton from nothing to Europe? Isn't Sam Allardyce the man who turned those wasters at Burnden Park (or the Reebok) and made them into super-fit over-achievers? I think Sunderland fans should be darned happy to get the manager Newcastle should still have. 4/1 against Allardyce might seem short, especially since every bookie is going to make him favourite for every job available, but this is a golden opportunity for him. Has-beens and chancers in the squad, a huge support - this is a job for Big Sam.
