Those Americans have a habit of fooling us - and Sarah Palin is yet another example. Where on earth did John McCain find her? Not only does she scare the heckfire out of most normal people, she makes him look like a lecherous old uncle. Don't forget, this guy has had more health scares than George Best had pints - so the idea that Sarah Palin could be President in 2013 is actually not far off the mark.

Remember Dan Quayle? He was a 'heartbeat' away from the Oval Office and he couldn't spell potato. Mind you, George W. Bush doesn't even know what a potato is, so in comparison, Vice President Quayle looked like a Harvard Graduate. Sarah Palin is in neither category - she might keep kids awake at night, but she's not stupid. The 7/2 offered by Paddy Power is actually quite a logical choice if John McCain actually does get elected. The bet does state that she is 'sworn in' as President in 2013, though.

Paddy Power are also offering a range of bets on the election, making Barack Obama a surprisingly short-odds favourite at 4/7. Now this could be explained by some partisan betting - most Europeans would love to see Obama as President, and would be betting with their hearts. This election is much closer than that, as the state-by-state betting shows. Most states seem to be largely pro-Republican. However, if you really think that Barack Obama will cure those racist little hearts in Utah, then you can get 50/1 that the Democrats will win that state. Yup, that's 50/1 in a two-horse race.

Interestingly, they are offering 30/1 that Joe Biden is dropped from the Democratic ticket - and 55/1 that he is replaced with Hillary Clinton. Clinton is becoming Obama's attack dog, notably as Palin has stepped into the fray. However, the idea that Obama would drop an experienced politician such as Biden is far-fetched.

Over here, Labour's days seem numbered, as the Conservatives are 2/9 to win the next election. Given that there may be a change of leader, and that opinion polls are often little to go by, 11/4 seems very generous and it may be worth a few pounds on Labour to pull something out of the hat. David Milliband is a very generous 2/1 to be the next leader of the Labour party, but he probably acknowledges the fact that Labour are going to get hammered whatever happens, so the 6/1 against Jack Straw is very tasty - an interim, bland choice who will take defeat on the chin for the party. Whyever not?
