It's funny when you go on holiday; it seems the whole country is falling apart without you. I had only just arrived at Stansted when I heard that XL Airways had gone bust, and then the entire financial market seemed to collapse after that.
Lehman Brothers, my own bloody bank - the Halifax for God's sake, and Man Utd's sponsors AIG all visited shit creek without their respective paddles and came out the other end looking as if they forgot the bloody canoe too. That's the thing when you go abroad for a week, everything seems to have greater importance, and you come back to a changed world.
It seems now that every airline is in trouble except for the biggies, so if you've booked a flight with Alitalia, well it's your own bloody fault. Paddy Power are offering odds on the next to go - and they're even doing it without Alitalia. I have to say - who the hell would want to fly with Alitalia anyway? My only experience with them involved being insulted, being very late and having my luggage very lost.
FlyGlobespan is currently the 3-1 favourite without Alitalia, and Spanair is 4-1. Air Berlin is a surprising 7-1 while you can get Finnair, SkyEurope, WizzAir and even Thomas Cook Airlines. Jet2, who are absolutely horrible, are 18-1 - and I say that because my sister's family were held up four hours going and four hours coming back - and you can get a curiously low 40-1 against Aeroflot or BmiBaby. Bizarre.
You could actually choose to bet on the next Premiership sponsor to go bust - and Manchester City of all clubs are the first in line with Thomas Cook, at 9-4. Newcastle are very low at 5-1 with Northern Rock - surprisingly so - while AIG, despite having been bailed out by the US Government (sorry, Tax Payer), are 8-1. This is on the sponsorship deal to have been announced as 'ended', so be careful with the wording here and check everything.
So there it is - I'm hoping it's Jet2 who go bust next, and at 18-1, it's worth a few pennies. It's a special "bet £10 get £20" free bet deal with Paddy Power, so get it here and double your money.
