Who will Liverpool sell first if the banks call in the money?
If you're not a Liverpool fan, then the idea that they could be in trouble with the banks will have you chuckling. But as we warned a month or so ago, the thought of a Premiership club going under is not so far fetched. So what of the fire sale at Anfield?
Jermaine Pennant is the evens money favourite with bookie Paddy Power to be the first player sold by Liverpool FC as the global credit crunch begins to bite.
With suggestions from football finance expert Keith Harris that a number of clubs, including Liverpool, are coming under pressure from growing debts and cash-starved Banks wanting their money back, speculation is mounting on who might be sacrificed to meet costs at Liverpool. However, one man often said to be a target for the likes of Chelsea and now Manchester City - Spanish striker Fernando Torres – is rated a 22/1 outsider by Paddy Power to be the first out of the door.
Pennant, who continues to look a peripheral player at Anfield, is followed in the betting by former Juventus target Xavi Alonso at 11/2 with Daniel Agger 15/2. Local boys Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are the 25/1 outsiders.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “As the Torres transfer fee largely came from borrowed cash there is a theory he could be a likely candidate to be sold, especially given the transfer fee Fernando would command. But we don’t believe Liverpool will be selling their crown jewels anytime soon, making the likes of Torres and Gerrard safe in our eyes.”
