A bunch of bankers got rich on betting against things going badly, so why can't you? Sarah 'The Idiot' Palin (as we call her round here) has turned out to be nothing more than a disaster for John McCain and is 10/1 to either step down or be dropped completely from his election ticket. OK, so that might not happen - and nor might the 20/1 against the election being cancelled completely. However, these days, you never know what's around the corner.
You're better off taking 7/4 against Italy pulling out of the Euro before the end of 2009. If nobody does, then you get your money back, so consider it an investment you can hardly lose. Ireland are second favourites at a bizarre 3/1 - strange, this one, as Ireland are one of the countries that has profited from the Euro, so I have my doubts that Ireland would ever pull out of the Euro. And if they do and this article is still around, I will be seen eating humble pie. I'm quite tempted by France at 12/1 - for all their posturing and preening, the French are damned irritating when it comes to applying EU laws - they pay out more in fines than anyone else - and there's even a village in France that has started accepting the Franc again. So just you wait for those irritating French politicians to declare they've had enough of Europe, probably because the Brits keep expanding it (because the Americans tell them too - booooo!).
How's about the next Pope? It'll be either an Italian or a South American in my opinion - those Cardinals missed a trick last time by going for a German, but those Americans might have had a word with the other Cardinals. With the waning power of the US, a South American might actually get through this time and Claudio Hummes is a good bet at 12/1. Father Dougall McGuire is 1000/1, so good luck to you if you want a couple of quid on that one. And for those of you who don't believe that the Americans had a hand in John Paul II becoming Pope, read Jon Snow's autobiography. He'll put you straight.
The Booker Prize often goes to writers of Asian origin, so it would be no surprise to see Amitav Ghosh seize the prize for Sea of Poppies. I tried reading that God of Small Things a few years back and Arundahati Roy's love of adjectives and adverbs really put me off. I got through 10 pages before she had finished describing someone's nasal hair or something. Forgive me, but I require a little more action from my novels, and Sea of Poppies (which for the record, I haven't read) is a decent shot at 3/1.
And finally - who will be the world's biggest economy on 1st January 2010? China at 5/2 is a whopper. I'll have that any day.
